About Bloom Manufacturing

The J.S. Bloom Co. was founded in 1910 to manufacture farm related equipment such as corn crushers, wooden elevators, and wooden stock tanks. Mr. Bloom built his first manufacturing plant, on the west end of Independence, IA next to the Rock Island Railroad, In the early days many of the raw products that the company needed were delivered on this rail line. In 1963 the company was purchased by three investors and was renamed Bloom, Inc. The new owners brought a wealth of metal working and engineering knowledge to the company. In a short time, with four full time employees, the company went from making wood products to manufacturing metal products including transport and utility farm augers and hydraulic winches.

In 1975 the company out grew its wood building so a new larger facility was built four miles west of Independence. The new steel building afforded much more manufacturing space for an expanded machine, fabrication shop and assembly area. The plant has since been enlarged several times and currently is over 30,000 square feet. 

Today Bloom Manufacturing Inc. is the largest business of its kind in Iowa specializing in hydraulic cable winches, speed reducers and capstans winches. Bloom custom designed winches, which are used on cranes, fishing boats, garbage trucks and many military applications, are sold throughout the United States, Canada, and exported to many countries.
